Program Overview

City Youth Jobs is a competitive program that places youth in  positions in municipal departments and agencies throughout the City.

The program provides Jersey City youth between the ages of 16 through 24  with the opportunity to see how city government works, while earning money through a meaningful work experience.

City Youth Jobs participants have worked in departments and agencies throughout the City including: Cultural Affairs, Communications, Housing, Economic Development and Commerce, the Law Department, the Business Administrator’s Office, the Council President’s Office, the city’s libraries, and many others.

Program Elements

Students will increase their career potential through:

  • Professional Enrichment: Youth are taught the everyday responsibilities of the workplace through soft and hard skill development. Over the course of the summer, youth  learn the importance of organization, teamwork, and time management.
  • Hands-on Work Experience: Throughout the summer, youth work on a variety of projects at their placements to improve their city. Whether it is through planning city festivals in the Cultural Affairs Department or helping to keep the city clean through the Department of Public Works, youth earn money, while finding opportunities to make a positive contribution to their community.

Application Process

  • Online Application: In order to be considered for the program, potential candidates must submit an online application, highlighting any previous work and extra-curricular activities, as well as which department or agency they are interested in working for throughout the summer.
  • Individual Interview: Select applicants are interviewed by a Summer Works staff member. Applicants are notified if they have been selected for an interview via email and/or phone call.

The application for City Youth Jobs 2017 has officially closed.
